For the most part, I follow this basic outdoor ethics philosophy: take only pictures, leave only footprints. Actually, I take it a step further and do my best to take lots and lots of pictures and to not leave any footprints, especially when hiking in our desert where we have lots of cryptobiotic soil.
However, when hiking in the San Rafael Swell, Utah recently, I got a wild hair and left something other than footprints. I don’t think anyone will mind.
If you happen to get to Crack Canyon or Little Wild Horse Canyon, let me know if you see this guy or any of his kind around.

What a lucky character this is to live out there…. wild, free, always happy!

And grounded. Truly grounded.

I hope people see it instead of just walking over it. It takes effort to be aware.

It sure does! You know, if I recall correctly, we saw one of these faces along our way and it made us smile and that is why we built some more further along.

Something short and sweet and happy?

Haha! I think nature will be ok with that! Thanks for looking out for the cryptobiotic soil : )

Very cute, and creative! My friends and I have adopted a tradition of stacking rocks on our travels. On our favorite river runs we always have an open eye to see if anyone has left one as we pass by. Mostly they get washed out but it’s fun…. 🙂

We’ve done something similar – add another rock to an already precarious cairn.
