A String of Pearls

Horizon. The space or line where the sky meets the earth. So many places where the sky meets the earth around the world, and millions of interactions between two elements. It can be water, a city skyline, a forest, a wasteland, a desert, a sunset outside your bedroom window. Is there a particular horizon which speaks to you? It’s hard to choose just one photo to submit for this! However, if I allow myself to choose more than one, then I fear I will have hundreds. I’ve got twenty interesting shots just from the past week. That’s the way it is when you live between the majestic Rocky Mountains and the desert southwest, one eye always on the sky and a camera in hand at all times.

Okay, so I’m only choosing one and this is it. I had just finished a short hike, was back in my vehicle, buckled up, already starting to back out of my parking space, when I looked up and saw this skeleton of a tree. I didn’t notice the sky, just that the tree was silhouetted against it. I threw the car in park, unbuckled, stepped out, aimed the camera, couldn’t see exactly what I was getting due to the brilliant sunshine, pushed the button, got back in the car, buckled up, and drove away. Later, when I downloaded my pictures from the day, I beheld the beauty of this most fortuitous shot. Not only did I not see the cloud behind the tree as I took the picture, but I, nor anyone else for that matter, will never return to this tree and see this particular sight again.

Rather than coming down from the sky, the cloud seems to erupt from the horizon like a geyser and bring life–if only for a few moments–back to the deceased old tree.
