This week’s photo challenge is UNEXPECTED.
Last year, on my birthday, Jim and the girls cooked up a little surprise for me. I had invited Jim over and he, in turn, had contacted the girls to see if they wanted to help him make dinner for me. They also planned a surprise birthday cake. Somehow, somehow, the cake was sneaked right past me in the kitchen and down into the basement until after the dinner was cooked and consumed. Then, somehow, somehow, the cake was suddenly in the kitchen and before me with all the candles already lit and burning. And another somehow, somehow, is that Jim got a picture of me without me even realizing he was taking it. The picture shows just how touched I was by these simple acts of love and kindness. And you can see by my daughters’ faces that they know how meaningful this was to me, too.
A few weeks later, I was digging around in the basement for something and I came upon a nearly empty can of frosting and a dirty knife. I was perplexed, wondering what in the heck these things were doing in the basement. You see, I hadn’t figured it out on my birthday that the cake was in the basement the entire time the dinner was being made. I never did figure out how it had magically appeared. Did I have a closet (basement) eater on my hands? It took me a while to put two and two together, but when I did it reminded me of that night and that simple, but unexpected, gesture.
Anyway, I just love this photo.

I love this! How nice of your family to catch you off guard and take in this moment. =)

Very “sweet.” I love the expression on your face! Those memories are priceless.

I do, too, and I don’t say that very often.

haha, I know what you mean about that. But every once in a while, a picture of me turns out to be actually ok. haha Maybe even that is part of the “unexpected.” 🙂

And see for me with that turning 40 and the ensuing forgetfulness, I would instantly blame myself, “When did I use frosting in the basement? I can’t believe I left this down here!” 😉
I’ve done that a few times but no, never with frosting in the basement.
Great story!
