Weekly Photo Challenge: ONE

This week’s photo challenge is ONE.

005It looks as if I photoshopped this leaf onto a white background, doesn’t it? Nothing too exciting.

009But this lone leaf was actually on my sunroof one gloomy late fall day. It looks as if it may have been the last to fall from my five tall elms.

010Now you can see that the first photo is just a close up of this one leaf taken from a slightly different angle.

I hope you like this interpretation of ONE. I can’t wait to see what others come up with. The Weekly Photo Challenges are such fun!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Let There be Light

This week’s photo challenge is light, specifically including the light source in the photo rather than outside of it.

To me, the lights in this scene represent either relief or fear of the unknown. Is that my friend coming down the trail or a stranger? It reminds me of a movie scene, maybe a war movie, in which the lights emerge first from the swirling dust of the dusk and there are a few apprehensive seconds before I know if they are enemy lights or friendly lights. And is that a weapon in his hand? But just behind the lights, breaking out of the dust now, is everything else–the ATV, the familiar shape of Jim, his cell phone, and, yes, our dogs running alongside the ATV. Relief and a smile overcome me.

Travel Theme: Sky

I don’t have to travel far for a big, blue, amazing, action-packed Western sky. My eyes are drawn to the sky and I have hundreds upon hundreds of sky photos. Since it’s impossible to choose from the normal spectacular ones, I decided to go with something a little more unique. This was taken on a hiking trail somewhere out in my big backyard.

Travel Theme: Delicate

This week’s travel theme is “delicate.”

How long can these delicate fibers hang on in the chilly October wind of the high plains in northern Colorado?

Weekly Photo Challenge: Horizon

Horizon. The space or line where the sky meets the earth. So many places where the sky meets the earth around the world, and millions of interactions between two elements. It can be water, a city skyline, a forest, a wasteland, a desert, a sunset outside your bedroom window. Is there a particular horizon which speaks to you? (http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/10/25/weekly-photo-challenge-horizon/)

It’s hard to choose just one photo to submit for this! However, if I allow myself to choose more than one, then I fear I will have hundreds. I’ve got twenty interesting shots just from the past week. That’s the way it is when you live between the majestic Rocky Mountains and the desert southwest, one eye always on the sky and a camera in hand at all times.

Okay, so I’m only choosing one and this is it. I had just finished a short hike, was back in my vehicle, buckled up, already starting to back out of my parking space, when I looked up and saw this skeleton of a tree. I didn’t notice the sky, just that the tree was silhouetted against it. I threw the car in park, unbuckled, stepped out, aimed the camera, couldn’t see exactly what I was getting due to the brilliant sunshine, pushed the button, got back in the car, buckled up, and drove away. Later, when I downloaded my pictures from the day, I beheld the beauty of this most fortuitous shot. Not only did I not see the cloud behind the tree as I took the picture, but I, nor anyone else for that matter, will never return to this tree and see this particular sight again.

Rather than coming down from the sky, the cloud seems to erupt from the horizon like a geyser and bring life–if only for a few moments–back to the deceased old tree.

Infinite Skies

The sky is an infinite movie to me. I never get tired of looking at what’s happening up there.  K. D. Lang

My daughter and I were playing cribbage at our campsite. I was keeping half an eye on the sky, as it looked like it was about to do something incredible. As the show got started, I said, “Quick, Amy, grab your camera!” and together we ran toward the lake and watched the beautiful show.

Grand Valley Sunset

We were getting back into town, late, from a weekend in the mountains. I was tired and, frankly, tired of taking pictures. I had hundreds from the weekend and didn’t feel like I needed another one. I almost didn’t stop for this shot. Now, it is one of my all time favorites.

I exited the mall on a weekday evening and beheld this unique sky. The picture was taken from the mall parking lot.

Walking in an Autumn Wonderland

The molecules of moisture on the trail expand and collapse beneath the warmth of the midday sun. The ground under the snow, not yet frozen on this early fall day, is already soupy, slippery.

I step lightly, eyes cast down, not wanting my feet to come out from beneath me. My vision of vigorous hiking melts to one of strolling.

I come up over the first rise. Ahead of me is a timeless scene of tranquility.

My Strange Addiction

I came home the other day and Addy had the t.v. on. “Hey, mama, wanna watch this with me?”

“What is it?” I rarely watch t.v. and when I do, I have to do something else simultaneously.

“It’s called ‘My Strange Addiction.’ This one is about this guy who eats glass.”

When your teenage daughter asks you if you want to watch a show with her, or do anything with her for that matter, you do it, even if the activity is number 192 on your priority list. More
